The rationale behind the proposed ban is that healthcare messaging should be focused on health and wellness, not on frivolous activities like dancing.

In an effort to crack down on the negative influence of social media, lawmakers in the United States have proposed a ban on healthcare influencers from dancing on TikTok. The proposed ban would prohibit anyone working in the healthcare industry from posting videos of themselves dancing on the popular social media platform.

Leading the initiative is Rep. Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey who believes that healthcare professionals’ primary focus must be “providing quality health care to the people of this country.” The proposal comes after reports that some medical professionals have used the platform to share “viral dance moves” instead of focusing on patient care.

Lawmakers suggest that healthcare influencers will have better opportunities to engage with their followers through online tools such as podcasts, blogs, and webinars.

“Healthcare influencers can be important voices in the conversation around health but it is important that their messages are based on evidence-based practice,” said Rep. Sherrill.

The rationale behind the proposed ban is that healthcare influencers have a unique ability to reach a large audience with their message, and that message should be focused on health and wellness, not on frivolous activities like dancing.

Critics of the proposed ban argue that it would violate the First Amendment rights of healthcare influencers, and that it would be impossible to enforce. It is unclear whether the proposed ban will gain any traction in Congress.
